Speed Camera Installed on Flic-en-Flac Bypass Hill

The Flic-en-Flac Bypass has been a long time coming and a genuine improvement for commuters travelling to and from the west of Mauritius. The road was designed to ease long-standing congestion around Cascavelle and Flic-en-Flac, improving overall connectivity across the region. For most drivers, it has done exactly that.

The hill section, however, quickly earned the nickname "the Cascavelle Racetrack" among locals. The name took on a grimmer dimension in late December 2025 when a video circulating on social media showed a car flipping on the hill as a result of dangerous driving.

A Speed Camera Has Been Installed

Authorities have responded by installing a speed camera on the hill. The timing fits within a broader national enforcement push. Under the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 2025, enforcement across Mauritius is stricter, fines are higher, and the technology used by the police is more advanced than ever. Recent studies have also identified new locations for cameras at dangerous spots across the island.

It is also worth noting that Mauritius now operates a penalty points system alongside fines, meaning certain offences carry consequences beyond an on-the-spot payment. For a full breakdown of which offences attract which points, the AutoCloud.mu guide onthe new penalty points system in Mauritius covers everything drivers need to know.

The bypass includes junctions, roundabouts, a bridge, and a cycle path across its 5.2-kilometre route, serving a wide range of road users daily.
