If you plan to live in Mauritius for work, family, or long-term residence, you’ll need to think about your driving licence. Tourists can legally drive with a foreign licence for short stays, but residents must convert theirs to a Mauritian one after 12 months, although they tend to be lenient. Here’s the full guide, with extra details for South African licence holders who require an attestation letter
You can apply for a Mauritian licence conversion if:
You are a resident of Mauritius, hold an occupation permit, or are married to a Mauritian
Your foreign licence is valid and in good standing
Prepare the following before heading to Port-Louis:
Written request addressed to the Licensing Officer for licence conversion
Original foreign driving licence and copies (front and back)
Valid passport and copy
Proof of residency, occupation permit, or dependent permit valid for at least six months
National ID or Mauritian UID card
Two recent passport-sized photos
Civil marriage certificate if applying through Mauritian spouse
Proof of address (utility bill, tenancy agreement, or bank statement)
Attestation/confirmation letter from your home country’s issuing authority certifying the validity of your licence (mandatory for South African licences and sometimes requested for others)
Mauritius requires an attestation/confirmation letter from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in South Africa confirming the validity of your SA licence

Prepare documents: Copy of SA ID, passport or driving licence, plus the completed form
If you hold a Traffic Register Number (TRN), first obtain a verification letter from the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa
Submit your application by emailing the completed form and supporting documents to DLconfirmations@rtmc.co.za
Processing time: Around 3–4 weeks for RSA ID holders
Collection:
In person at RTMC, Centurion Gate Business Park, Pretoria
Or arrange courier collection (quote applicant’s name and SA ID number)
Collection hours: Monday–Thursday, 08h00–15h00
No scanned or emailed letters are provided
This letter must then be included in your application to the Mauritius Traffic Branch
Submit your written application and all supporting documents via email (licensing@govmu.org), or in person at theTraffic Branch, Line Barracks, Port-Louis
Your documents will be reviewed and verified. This can take up to two weeks, after which you will be contacted for a follow-up appointment
At your appointment, bring along the original documents and passport photos. You will also need to pay the conversion fee in cash, which ranges from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 depending on the licence class
After payment, you will be issued a receipt and informed of the date to collect your Mauritian driving licence, usually within 2–4 weeks. Keep the receipt safe, as it must be presented when collecting your licence
Payment and collection must be done in person, by that person
The process may involve multiple visits, so keep copies of everything
South African licences always require the RTMC confirmation letter before the Mauritius conversion can be processed
